When Daniel Foo and his business partners decided to open Caffé Verve in Batu Bersurat, they wanted to bring something unique to the local food scene: well-made quality coffee and authentic Italian food cooked with passion and ingenuity. From the ever popular Duck Ragu served with spaghetti to the Broccoli and Blue Cheese Pizza – you can expect to savour the unexpected here. No matter what you choose from this menu, Daniel and his team make sure that each dish is skillfully prepared by chefs who understand the importance of using fresh, flavourful ingredients in Italian cooking.

But besides serving up fabulous Italian food, what really makes Caffé Verve ‘authentic’ is an atmosphere of conviviality. The stylish and relaxed décor creates the perfect ambiance for get-togethers with family or friends to celebrate any and every occasion. Daniel told us that the designing and decorating of Caffé Verve was a team effort involving all three partners, together with a friend who’s an architect. Modern industrial styled light fittings hang like pretty pendulums from the high ceiling and the polished concrete floor is dressed with blue and white patterned tiles and Moroccan tiles in some areas. Daniel also revealed that all of the woodwork throughout the café was expertly done by a local contractor. But the feature that will capture your attention, especially if you remember the sensational 70s, is the turntable that stands proudly in the corner of the room with a great selection of vinyl records (all of which can be purchased). In fact, as we sat there sipping our cups of freshly brewed coffee, the incredibly rich strains of Bob Dylan’s voice filled the room with the unforgettable “Blowing in the Wind”. With a comfortable seating capacity for over 40 customers, the café is just the right size to enable Daniel to casually engage with his customers.

There’s Daniel, who worked previously as a Chemistry teacher for 30 years and who admitted that it’s always been his dream to open a café. He is self-taught and has an in-depth understanding of the complex world of coffee connoisseurship and explained that he increasingly uses scientific principles to perfect the entire coffee-making process from bean to cup. Daniel said, “Coffee making is labour intensive and it is important to understand the different types of beans, the variety of flavours and extraction processes”. We observed as Daniel made an Ice Pourover Coffee using “Brazilian Yellow Bourbon Coffee beans” and were amazed to see the precision and meticulous care which he took during each stage of the process. From accurately weighing the coffee beans; to heating the water to the right temperature – he said that all of this has to be done

correctly in order to achieve the perfect multi-sensory experience when drinking coffee. Other popular drinks include Italian Soda, Chai Latte, Vanilla Coconut and much more. There’s also an array of desserts like carrot cake, croissants, cinnamon streusel, banana cake and blueberry cheesecake.

When it comes to Italian cuisine another business partner who worked in London and who also has experience with Italian cooking, ensures that every dish on the menu is superbly executed. The aim is to provide customers with a range of genuine Italian food which includes pizzas with exciting new topping combinations. With 12 employees, the owners are proud that their staff is 100% local – and their focus is on maintaining high standards of quality and providing good, friendly, service. These owners are all hands-on and are on-site daily, working to make sure that customers are completely satisfied.

We met 19 year old Ruby Lim who has been trained as a barista by Daniel and seemed to personify the word “Verve” – she loves her job and enthusiastically told us that efficiency and customer service is a top priority for her. Like any good teacher, Daniel is determined to help the young employees to realise their strengths and to encourage and challenge them to learn more about the food and beverage business. Customers at Caffé Verve can expect to enjoy an exceptional dining experience and can look forward to the opening of the mezzanine level which Daniel revealed will have its own distinctive design and character.
