Foods that Double as Cleaning Products

Many of the things we eat all the time have uses other than just keeping us satiated. You’ll be surprised at how many condiments or foods there are that has dual purposes. Here are some foods that will not only save you money, but also double their duties as cleaning products:

1/ Banana peels can polish silver
If your prized silverware collection is starting to get a bit tarnished, rub the inside of a banana peel along the tarnished areas on your silver. This will easily help make them look as good as new.

2/ Cucumber peels can remove marks on walls and tables
Cucumbers are extremely versatile cleaning products. They definitely come in handy when your children love scribbling on your walls. The cucumber peels can remove marks on walls and countertops. If you want a non-foggy bathroom mirror when you get out of the shower, simply rub the cucumber peel on it before you start the water.

3/ Use ketchup to brighten up your copper pots and pans
If you have any copper items that need some polishing, all you need to do is grab a bottle of ketchup, dab some of it on a cloth on to your item, and let it sit for 10-30 minutes. The acids in the condiment will remove the tarnish.

4/ A raw onion will clean your dirty grill grates
This comes extremely useful for those of us who love barbeques. If you run half of a raw onion against your grill grate with the cut side down, it should remove the grease and leftover grit on your grill. The best option is to heat up your grill to help burn off any attached food or grime, then add the onion to the end of a large fork and go at it.

5/ A slice of white bread will help pick up little pieces of broken glass
All you need to do is grab one piece of bread, dampen it, and dab it on your floor to pick up all the little shards of glass left. It is much easier and safer than sweeping the glass away or hovering it up.

6/ Rice will clean your coffee or spice grinder
Take some uncooked rice and put it in your coffee or spice grinder. Grind it up to the point that the rice becomes dust. When you remove the dust, it will also remove any coffee bean or spice fragments that were initially left in your grinder. Then you can just clean off the remaining dust with a damp cloth.

7/ Use Coke to clean your toilet bowl
You may have heard of this one before! The acids in Coke will help remove any toilet bowl stains, apparently. Grab a can and pour the whole thing into your toilet bowl. Let the coke sit in there for an hour, then scrub the bowl like you normally would and flush. Your toilet should be sparkling clean after.
